I’d like to personally welcome each of you to the XVII International Conference on Electrical
Bioimpedance (ICEBI), the most important platform for presenting recent scientific achievements
in the area of electrical bioimpedance. It’s an exciting time for Bioimpedance as we continue to
grow and adapt, remaining always adaptable, motivated and responsive (Insert appropriate
adjectives, such as “customer-focused”, “relevant” or “open to new ideas”). Our organization is
confronting a time of many advances in technology and we’re meeting these advances during a time
of larger nation-wide and global change. The world of Bioimpedance is an exciting area in which to
work/study/play, and we’ll continue to meet and bring inspired people together in forums like this,
to ensure our research community remains at the cutting edge.
I’d like to give you an idea of what you can expect and what we hope to achieve over the six days
of the conference. The conference starts on 9 th of June 2019 with workshop presented by companies
related to the impedance measurement business. From 10 to 13 th of June 2019, over 300 papers are
expected to be presented in the conference as a oral or poster format. Full papers will be published
as an IFMBE proceedings book. Extended papers will be invited to the special issue of
Physiological Measurement journal, which will be published in February 2020.
The last conference was held at the Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden (19–23 June 2016).
Let me give you a brief update on where we would like to be in the next conference. The ICEBI
2019 will be held in Joinville (Brazil) at Bourbon Business Hotel. It is planned to have 4 mini-
courses and 6 tutorials or invited lectures, covering relevant and indispensable topics for starting
and getting a deep understanding on electrical bioimpedance. The ICEBI 2019 will have a “Live
Demonstration of Bioimpedance Technologies” (OLBIT) track to allow an interactive and tangible
form of presentation, which is quite different from the oral or poster sessions. The demonstrations
will be conducted in presentation booths and ample space will be provided to set up a working
system, may it be interactive software on a laptop or a hardware setup. Conference attendees are
invited to experience the demonstrations directly, to interact with, play with, and challenge them.
Presenters will have the opportunity to show direct proof of their working bioimpedance systems
and to create a lasting impression. This type of session will be organized in the first time at ICEBI.
Prospective demonstrations could be either related to the work that has already been published or
the one going to be published at the ICEBI 2019 Conference.
Before I close, I’d like to draw your attention for attending our conference and bringing your
expertise to our gathering. You, as organization leaders, as students, as research scientists, have the
vision, the knowledge, the wherewithal and the experience to help us pave our way into the future
of Bioimpedance. Throughout this conference, I ask you to stay engaged, keep us proactive and
help us shape the future of Electrical Bioimpedance. My personal respect and thanks goes out to all
of you who have been supporting this conference over the last decades.
